How to wash face - Ways to Wash your Face

Regular and timely cleansing is critical to maintaining radiant and healthy skin. Cleansing is perhaps the most simple and effective method for flawless skin. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, and other unwanted debris from the skin, especially from our face, which is in constant contact with bacteria, pollutants, viruses, dirt, etc. Without washing, our skin would be coated with a thick layer of dirt and however expensive cosmetic products we may use; they will never have any effect on the skin. Clogging pores with pollutants, excess oil and old cells result in the development of acne. The skin may become dry, irritated and wrinkled. Washing the face daily twice removes impurities and gives the skin a fresh look.

Benefits Of Facial Cleansing

The skin on our face is more sensitive than other areas of the body. Excessive dirt build up on the skin causes clogged pores mixed with sweat and dead skin cells and this often results in acne. Proper skin cleansing clears the pores and helps the sebum to protect the skin surface.

Dehydrated skin looks rough and aged. Regular facial cleansing helps the skin to maintain a proper level of hydration. Cleansing helps manage PH levels of the skin.

Cleansing helps anti-aging products and treatments work effectively on our skin.

Excess amounts of oil and dead skin cells can cause the skin pores to appear larger than usual. Cleansing helps maintain proper pore size.

Avoid These Mistakes While Cleansing

Using Bar Soap

A bar of soap may be convenient and effective for the body, but it is not suited for facial cleaning.  Bar soap may prove to be too harsh for our sensitive facial skin and it may cause irritation and dryness. Always opt for a facial cleanser.

Using Any Cleanser

Know your skin type before choosing a cleanser. Using the wrong cleanser can hinder the efficacy of the skin products that we use. While oily skin would require a cleanser that helps regulate oil production, dry skin needs more hydrating ingredients. Cream-based cleansers are great for dry skin while gel or foamy cleansers are better for oily skin types. Make sure you understand the ingredients of the cleanser and then choose one avoiding allergens. Selecting a cleanser with a balanced PH will help maintain the skin’s natural balance.

Applying Cleanser Incorrectly

The over-enthusiastic among us may want to remove all the dirt at once and might resort to harsh cleansing. Applying too much pressure on the face will cause irritation.  Rubbing of skin is a strict no. Massage your cleanser lightly onto the skin by using soft, circular motions. Apply cleansing lotion on dry skin and rub it in for a few seconds. Stronger gels should be applied to wet skin.

Cleansing with dirty hands

Often an overlooked detail, touching your skin with filthy hands aggravates breakouts. Wash your hands thoroughly to remove the dirt and bacteria before washing your face.

Using too hot or too cold water

Using extreme temperatures over the face can cause irritation to the face. It is always desirable to use lukewarm water.

Rushing it Through

If we really want to take good care of our skin, then we must spend some time on it. Dedicating 1-2 minutes for facial cleansing is ideal.

Not Removing Make-Up

It is natural to think that cleansing will automatically remove make-up as well. But it is not true. While cleansing can remove residue of makeup, it is not effective for complete makeup removal. Before cleansing, it is better to remove all traces of makeup first.

Skipping morning or night routine

There are times when we feel too tired at night and want to just hit the bed. Some of us may feel very fresh and don’t feel the need for washing the face in the morning. However, cleansing the face twice daily gives a minimum guarantee to your skin.

Skipping Moisturizer

Your skin may feel tight after face wash.  This is so because even the gentlest cleanser may leave our face dry. So always follow face wash with a daily moisturizer within 60 seconds.

Rubbing with washcloth

Once you have cleansed your face, gently pat dry your skin. Do not rub your face dry. This can cause inflammation. Use soft washcloths. Make sure the towel is dry as a damp one can cause breakouts.

How to Wash Your Face

  • Pull your hair back.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Remove make-up with a make-up remover.
  • Apply cleanser to your face and massage in a circular motion for thirty seconds to a minute.  If you are acne-prone, it is advisable to use the medicated cleanser. If you have dry skin, washing your face more than once a day will irritate the skin more. People with dry skin can skip the full cleansing routine in the morning. A splash of lukewarm water or a pat with a damp washcloth will be better for them. It is important to thoroughly cleanse the face with a gentle cleanser in the night and remove all debris.
  • Do not forget to cleanse your neck as well.
  • Exfoliate the skin every few days. Use a facial scrub to rub the skin in a circular motion. Never use a scrub brush on acne-prone skin. Exfoliating using oil will be good for dry skin.
  • Use warm or lukewarm water to rinse your face, making sure to wash away all traces of your cleanser and scrub. Use cool or lukewarm water for rinsing dry skin.
  • Use a towel to pat the face dry.
  • Apply toner using a cotton ball, focusing on areas where your pores appear large.
  • Apply moisturizer formulated for facial skin. An oil-free moisturizer will be just fine for acne-prone skin. During the daytime, use a moisturizer that contains sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher to protect your face from the sun’s rays.
